I have meant to write about automatic litter boxes and what I recommend. Still, another post for another day. This piece is about a video by Philip Bloom of One Man Five Cats (well, One Man Seven Cats) from last month that exposed potentially lethal safety flaws in specific self-cleaning litter boxes. If you haven’t followed his channel, details are below. This is an important video that needs to stay fresh in public attention, hence why I am writing about it now, as we get closer to Black Friday. Hopefully, I can help prevent the loss of a beloved pet and inform you about what you should look for when shopping for an automatic litter box.
I have admired Bloom’s videos for years and have been trying to figure out how to bring more traffic to his YouTube channel. Because I love cats, and I wish I could do videos like he does. While I don’t talk about cats much on this site (for now), I do share videos and pictures on my social media channels. But nothing to the scale he does, and I hope to change that someday. His latest video caught fire, where he demonstrates how several automatic litter boxes, primarily from unestablished manufacturers, could pose severe risks to pets. …and as someone who likes cats, I feel it is essential to try and spread Bloom’s message.

Not all Automatic Litter Boxes are created equal.
I want to be clear, not all automatic litter boxes are bad; otherwise, I would not have bought the Litter Robot 4… 4 times, which you can see in the pictures above. Since I have an incriminating number of cats (I declare myself the father of cats on my social media channels), it helps to have a self-cleaning litter box. Plus, since I have ADHD, it helps to have notifications when a litter box needs to be emptied, fixed, or maintained. However, I wish there was a desktop app for these notifications, as I am likelier to be on my PC than my phone. As for what brands I trust, I will discuss this further in, but for now, I want to focus on One Man Five Cat’s video. He shows several cases where unfamiliar automatic litter box brands are the same model, exposing the fake automatic litter box industry. As the guy behind Hosting-Reviews-Exposed.com, I am a big fan of exposing scams, and any company that sells products for pets must keep pet safety in mind and deserve full exposure.
Bloom demonstrates safety failures in these questionable devices. During one session, he cautiously inserted his hand to simulate a cat’s presence and, despite his preparation, barely managed to withdraw it before the mechanism activated. The footage shows the cleaning mechanism continuing its cycle without pause, demonstrating how the supposed safety features failed to activate. More alarmingly, Bloom’s testing with a stuffed animal shows the devastating potential consequences. The footage reveals the test subject caught and crushed by the mechanism, raising severe concerns about real-world safety risks to pets.
But, before you watch the video that I feel you should watch, I have to issue a content warning.
Content Warning: This video describes pet injuries and accidents involving automated litter boxes, which may be distressing for some viewers, especially pet owners. Viewer discretion is advised.
I feel it is essential to watch this video, especially since Bloom demonstrates what happens to a stuffed animal toy when there are no apparent safeguards and what happens when those safeguards are in place. Esspecially if you are considering one of these unsafe models.
A short intermission before I break down Bloom’s Video
After watching that demonstration, I imagine you’ll need a palate cleanser. For this, a recent foster I found.
The devasting part is she is almost ready for adoption. Make sure to follow One Man Five Cats at:

Let’s summarize (or overanalyze) this video on what to look for and avoid.
*This section will be updated pending any changes or new concerns*
Below, I summarize the key findings from Bloom’s video. These details highlight specific products and stores of concern to be aware of and what to look for to avoid potentially dangerous products.
Specific Products and Stores of Concern
Brands that Bloom’s makes clear you should avoid (and I will amend if I see any more)
- Amztoy: Documented in connection with a fatal incident, with branding that deceptively mimics established manufacturers
- Popur X5: Found to lack crucial safety features while making unsubstantiated claims about kitten and small animal safety
- Generic Brands: Multiple identical products appearing under different names across platforms, indicating potential quality control issues
Notable problematic sales channels, including:
- AliExpress: Notable for poor return policies and consistently low-quality products
- Wayfair: Identified as selling potentially dangerous knockoff products. Note that Bloom has indicated that they pulled all of the products from the description of his video. But that does not mean they will not return later.
- Indiegogo: Flagged for selling early versions of unproven machines
- Amazon: Carries multiple suspect brands with inconsistent quality, and companies will start up new product listings and storefronts once exposed. I have seen this frequently with other products. Caution is advised when buying this type of product from Amazon. Make sure to review the history of the seller.
How to Identify Potentially Dangerous Automatic Litter Boxes
According to Bloom, warning signs include:
- Unknown brand names
- Claims to be made for ferrets and other species
- High-cost returns
- Significantly lower prices than established brands
- Lack of safety documentation
- No clear manufacturer information
- Recently listed products.
- Sellers who have a history of selling other products unrelated products through companies like Amazon and Walmart.
- A lack of critical reviews and too many positives over a short period of time can be troubling.
- Crowdfunded or early-stage machines may lack rigorous safety testing. Choose products with a proven track record rather than models still in the testing.
So, what should you look for in an automatic litter box?
There are some good ones out there,.
1. Safety Sensor Reliability
- Ensure the litter box has multiple sensors, such as:
- Weight sensors to detect when a cat is inside.
- Infrared or motion sensors to pause the cleaning cycle if a cat approaches.
- Pinch detectors to reverse or stop rotation if resistance is sensed.
- Verify that the sensors are highly responsive and do not reset prematurely. The cycle should only resume once the cat has fully exited the box.
- Confirm that sensors work without needing an app or firmware updates.
2. Design of the Entrance and Opening – HIGHLY IMPORTANT
- Look for models where the entrance remains open during cycling, allowing a cat to escape if needed.
- Avoid single-piece entrances that close off entirely during rotation, as these can trap pets inside.
- Check that the design includes a split or detachable entrance or door mechanism, allowing an exit if the cat is accidentally trapped.
3. Quality of Build and Materials
- Ensure materials are durable, with no sharp edges that could cause injury.
- Look for models with non-stick litter linings to prevent waste from clinging to the plastic, which improves hygiene and reduces the need for frequent manual cleaning.
- Avoid machines with thin or brittle plastics that may break or degrade quickly, especially in high-rotation areas.
4. User Instructions and Safety Guidelines
- The manual should provide detailed safety instructions, including minimum pet weight for safe operation and specific warnings for small pets like kittens or ferrets.
- Verify if the manufacturer offers clear, thorough setup and maintenance instructions for the user, reducing the chance of operational errors.
5. Size of Waste Compartment
- Ensure the waste compartment is large enough to handle your cat’s needs without frequent emptying. Small compartments may result in frequent jams or ineffective cleaning.
- Look for waste bin sensors that alert you when the bin is full. This can prevent overflow and malfunctions.
6. Brand Transparency and Accountability
- Reputable brands with an established history in pet products are generally safer, as they’re more likely to adhere to safety standards and offer customer support.
- Avoid generic brands or products sold under various names, as these often lack consistent quality and may have minimal customer service options.
7. Return and Warranty Policies
- Confirm the brand offers a reliable return policy and adequate warranty, ideally covering parts and service for a set period.
- Avoid sellers who offer vague return policies, especially those that don’t cover shipping costs for returns.
8. Independent Reviews and Testing
- Seek reviews from independent sources or forums reporting real-world performance and safety incidents.
- Avoid relying solely on Amazon reviews, as these can sometimes be manipulated or incentivized.
My Recommendations for an automatic litter box
I have two favorites
While some automatic litter boxes pose serious risks, several well-established brands have proven track records of safety and reliability. Based on my own hands-on experience, here are two safe options I can confidently recommend:
Litter-Robot 4 (LR4): The gold standard in automated litter boxes, with 25 years of safety innovation. The model LR4 replaces my LR3s; they are a definite improvement over the older models. Anyone with both will tell you the LR4 is the better investment, even if you are considering the cheaper LR3s.
-
- Multiple fail-safe sensors to detect cat presence
- such as Laser detection. This has been great with foster kittens. The weight required for a cat to use the LItter-Robot 3 to register a visit is 5 pounds. Whereas the LR4 is 3 pounds, but I have seen it detect 2-pound kittens get in and be detected (for which I recommend a manual mode until they are the right weight).
- Emergency stop mechanisms
- Proper weight calibration
- Regular firmware updates
- Excellent customer support; (I feel I should elaborate more, but even with one month left on one of my LR3s, they quickly replaced a part.
- WiFi connectivity with real-time monitoring and reporting)
- Large, comfortable chamber suitable for most cat sizes, Big enough for my big boy, Gungi (28 pounds, the big black cat you saw above).
- It has a handle on the drum, which is handy for cleaning.
- It is far easier than LR3 to change out the litter bag; it is leaps and bounds better than LR3s.
- Multiple fail-safe sensors to detect cat presence

Catgenie: This is my favorite. My first was CatGenie 120, which I have had for 6 years. Not much maintenance was needed. Like the LR4, which is a vast improvement over the LR3, CatGenie A.I. is an improvement over the 120. It is the first model to get the online treatment, so you will know when it washes and when it needs more cleaning solutions. Both models are still active at my house, and the 120 is not going to be replaced until it dies.
But before I explain why I love this over the other, there are things to consider first.
1. Not every cat I have likes it or uses it. Those who do will avoid the Litter Robot 4s and even wait right next to the Catgenies to finish its cycle. ..because its clean.
2. Requires a cold water connection and drains into a toilet, laundry drain, or another drain pipe. In my case, I have them in two bathrooms, hooked up to the toilet water line, and the waste goes into the toilet.
Notable features include:
-
- Washable, reusable granules, so no big heavy bags of cat litter.
- Full water cleaning and sanitizing system
- Built-in drying cycle
- Multiple safety sensors
- Child lock features
- Programmable cleaning cycles
- Not a lot of maintenance. I probably run a clean cycle more than most.
- Water and plumbing connection required, but worth the setup
